SKER received a call to our hotline one cold, dark, stormy night. A little koala joey had been found in a puddle just a few streets away. Rescuers tried to retrieve his mum but she was too high in the trees. The next day she was gone and no one could find her since. Harry was just 580gms and was quickly warmed up and dried off. He was hand raised for the wild along with the other joeys in SKER’s care. When it came time to release him, he didn’t pass his veterinary exam. Discovering that he had a genetic condition called hip dysplasia it was deemed unethical for him to be released. Special permission from the government was sought to keep Harry permanently at SKER and he remains our only permanent resident.
There are many costs involved in providing Harry with a fulfilled life in his custom built tree yard but he works so hard to advocate for koalas that we wouldn’t have it any other way.
