Unique Opportunity for a Veterinarian with a passion for wildlife
Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue (SKER) is a not-for-profit charity with DGR status, governed by a board, with
a dedicated team of over thirty volunteers. We are located on a 22 acre property and work mostly in the Southern
Adelaide region, encompassing the southern suburbs, Fleurieu, and Hills. We respond to calls to our rescue
hotline 24/7 providing advice, attending to rescues, and working collaboratively with other rescue groups in our
area to make sure no native wildlife endure unnecessary suffering. We are a Registered Veterinary Service
Provider with a well equipped clinic with specialised Koala and Echidna Hospital and Rehabilitation enclosure and
pre-release tree yards.
We are now looking to employ a second Casual Veterinarian to work with our lead Casual and Volunteer vets to
help us grow as an organisation.
Our long-term goal is to have Full time coverage by vets with a passion for Wildlife Clinical work and also a desire to expand our research linkages. We have established the Jo Griffith Research Initiative (in honour of our late friend and avid wildlife vet and researched Dr Joanna Griffith) and SKER currently works closely with wildlife researchers in SA, Qld and NSW.
What we are seeking:
We are looking for a qualified veterinarian with a passion for wildlife, self-motivated and willing to take on a variety
of tasks. Extensive wildlife experience is not a requirement as we have a network of wildlife savvy vets that are
available for mentoring and advice. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with a
network of vets and other relevant stakeholders.
Wildlife rescue is unpredictable and as such willingness to be flexible is essential, however, actual hours worked
can be tailored around the successful applicant’s lifestyle. There is no requirement to be on call for this position
and all hours worked will be between a bandwidth of 8am and 8pm depending on the candidate’s personal
circumstances. We are initially seeking to fill one to two additional 3 or 4 hour shifts a week over the busy
summer/autumn period however there is flexibility to suit this around the successful applicants other
commitments. This will be the ideal role for a recently retired vet or a vet taking time off to care for young children.
What we are offering:
This very unique opportunity for a casual position that gives excellent work life balance and is supported by a
board of directors and experienced wildlife rescuers, vets and nurses with a variety of professional skillsets with
immense patience and understanding.
The employment package will include an attractive hourly rate based on experience with an additional allowance
to cover Vet Surgeons Board registration and EPA radiation license fee and any other licenses if required for the
role.
Our Centre has all the equipment required to carry out complete veterinary assessments, treatment and
hospitalisation on injured and sick wildlife including:
● Ultrasound
● CR radiography
● Gas Anaesthesia
● Critical Care equipment
● In house lab (IDEXX blood chemistry, microscope, refractometers etc)
To be successful in this role:
You must hold a Bachelor degree in Veterinary Science or higher and be registered
with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia, or be eligible to be registered. Experience is an
advantage, however, we will also consider applications from highly motivated new graduates with an interest in
working with Australian wildlife.
